In March 2005, fives cities, boasting six of the country’s most outstanding performing arts centers, formally banded together to address these pressing issues of concern:
• Intense competition from well-financed , for-profit entertainment conglomerates, such as Clear Channel Communications
• Erosion of profit margins on Broadway productions, the mainstay of virtually all performing arts centers
• Ebbing fortunes of many resident local and regional arts groups – symphony, dance, and opera companies -- that depend on significant subsidies from their performing arts centers
• Paucity of quality programs for our stages
Five Cent Productions, legally formed as an LLC in March 2005, represents a creative and financially sophisticated model for the creation of new work, as well as a consortium for action on a host of allied initiatives. Its founders believe that Five Cent Productions is an important prototype, which offers our industry a replicable new paradigm for collective action.
